About 'diet and energy'|Energy Drinks and Diet Soda

Nutrition               has               long               been               known               to               play               an               important               part               in               the               treatment               of               disease,               including               many               types               of               cancer.

While               it               is               not               known               to               be               curative,               a               strong               diet               can               help               healthy               cells               remain               healthy               as               the               cancer               is               treated               with               chemotherapy,               immunotherapy,               or               radiation.

In               addition,               by               keeping               normal               cells               healthy               through               nutrition,               some               of               the               side               effects               of               chemotherapy               can               be               mitigated.

More               than               910,000               people               will               undergo               chemotherapy               treatment               this               year,               and               most               will               experience               side               effects               or               adverse               events.

Thus,               adequate               nutrition,               including               the               potential               use               of               nutritional               supplements,               is               essential               to               battling               cancer               and               potentially               moderating               some               of               the               pain               associated               with               treatment.

Nutritional               supplements               and               healthy               dietary               choices               are               helpful               to               cancer               patients,               particularly               those               undergoing               treatment               with               chemotherapy               or               radiation.

These               two               treatments               are               particularly               difficult               for               patients               because               they               affect               healthy               cells               in               addition               to               the               cancerous               cells               they               try               to               kill.

The               primary               aim               of               the               treatment               is               to               kill               cancerous               cells               while               sparing               the               largest               number               of               healthy               cells               possible.

While               treatments               have               improved               over               the               years,               healthy               cells               are               still               susceptible               to               the               toxins,               and               death               of               these               healthy               cells               in               addition               to               cancer               cells               causes               many               of               the               side               effects               associated               with               treatment.
Despite               the               severity               of               chemotherapy               and               radiation               treatment,               it               is               essential               in               the               fight               against               most               types               of               cancer.

For               this               reason,               in               most               cases               of               cancer               the               side               effects               of               treatment               should               be               mitigated               rather               than               resorting               to               treatment               cessation.

Consequently,               keeping               a               healthier               diet               and               taking               nutritional               supplements               can               provide               more               positive               results               during               treatment.

While               they               do               not               have               proven               efficacy               against               the               cancer               itself,               diet               and               nutrition               can               help               protect               healthy               cells.
Dietary               supplements               include               natural               supplements               and               boosts               and               are               available               from               a               wide               variety               of               sources.

Natural               supplements               are               substances               found               naturally               that               purportedly               have               health               benefits.

They               include               herbs,               vitamins               and               minerals,               and               other               naturally               occurring               ingredients               that               keep               healthy               cells               nourished               in               the               face               of               harsh               treatment.

In               contrast,               boosts               help               patients               with               the               side               effects               of               treatment               by               helping               to               augment               low               energy               levels               and               metabolism               during               treatment.

Boosts               usually               come               as               shakes               or               bars.
Diet               and               nutrition               play               a               significant               part               in               treating               the               side               effects               of               cancer               treatment               and               keeping               the               body               generally               healthy               as               it               goes               through               the               trauma               of               cancer.

Nevertheless,               they               should               not               be               substituted               for               more               standard               treatments               unless               advised               by               an               oncologist               or               other               accredited               physician               on               a               patient's               treatment               team.

In               addition,               patients               should               consult               a               nutritionist               in               addition               to               their               physician               in               order               to               determine               the               best               supplements               or               dietary               choices               for               them.

The               FDA               began               enforcing               regulations               regarding               supplements               in               2007,               but               some               do               not               take               effect               before               2010.

As               a               consequence,               it               is               necessary               for               licensed               professionals               to               always               be               consulted               before               alternative               treatments               are               used.
Chemotherapy               and               radiation               can               be               tremendously               uncomfortable               and               debilitating               treatments,               but               through               advised               use               of               nutrition               and               diet,               patients               can               better               combat               their               cancer               and               keep               their               body               healthy.
